INVESTING IN CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
TOWARD A CANADA-CHINA FIVE YEAR CSR PLAN
Canada Pavilion, Shanghai Expo Sept 16, 10am - 4.30pm
ON CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
BACKGROUND:
In consultation with CSR experts in Canada and China, the Whistler Forum is hosting this our
second China Canada CSR Symposium. In October 2009 we organized and co-hosted the first
CSR symposium with the China Executive Leadership Academy Pudong (CELAP) . The report from
those sessions with its focus on standards, training and collaborative case studies related to the
extractive sector is available on the Forum website at www.whistlerforum.com.
Since October 2009 there have been important bi-lateral meetings resulting in the new Canada
China Strategic Partnership Agreement announced during President Hu Jintao’s visit to Ottawa on
June 24.
A significant element of this partnership is a renewed focus on governance issues and our ongoing
work on CSR in Canada and China advances this.
The theme for this Symposium is Banking on the Future, Investing in Training. Given the solid
reputation of Canadian banks, and the increasing influence of the IFC’s Social and Environmental
Performance Standards, and the Equator Principles this theme is both timely and relevant.
GOALS:
To learn from cases and practical applications of CSR principles and standards by Canadian and
Chinese companies operating internationally: UN Global Compact; UNEP FI, IFC Performance
Standards, Equator Principles; Global Reporting Initiative.
To advance the incentives for CSR-influenced lending and investing practises in Canada, China
and internationally: Equator Principles, Sustainable Finance, Green Credit/Insurance Policies,
Shanghai Stock Exchange CSR Index, etc.
To increase resources for and effectiveness of CSR training with experts and educators:
In financial, extractive and forestry sectors; with toolkits and curricula from companies, schools
and training centres; with collaborative research and case studies.
To set the agenda for the Whistler April 24 to 26, 2011 Conference for the development of the
Canada-China Five Year CSR Plan: In light of China’s 12th Five-Year Plan, planning CSR goals for
2016 and mobilizing the strategic advantages and resources to meet them.
