2010年9月22日－23日，卫生部部长陈竺陪同温家宝总理出席了在纽约举行的联合国千年发展目标高级别会议、艾滋病专题讨论会和千年发展目标妇幼健康战略启动仪式等一系列活动。在纽约期间，陈竺部长还会见了全球抗击艾滋病、结核病和疟疾基金执行主任卡察契金（Michel Kazatchkine）等国际组织官员，并接受了《华尔街日报》记者的采访。

　　9月24日，陈竺部长前往华盛顿特区，访问了美国卫生与公众服务部、美国国立卫生研究院和美国食品药品监督管理局。

　　陈竺与美国卫生与公众服务部部长凯瑟琳·西贝利厄斯（Katherine Sebelius）会谈中表示，卫生合作是中美合作的重要组成部份，近年来呈现多领域、务实、高效的特点。在继续深化医药卫生体制改革的框架下，中国将进一步加强卫生人力资源和卫生信息化建设，提高新型农村合作医疗水平。双方简要介绍了各自卫生改革进展，并一致赞同进一步加强卫生政策与改革、卫生信息化、慢性病和传染病防控等领域合作，保护人民健康。

　　陈竺会见了美国食品药品监督管理局局长玛格丽特·哈姆博格（Margaret Hamburg）。陈竺强调，中美两国食品药品监管领域的良好合作，推动了两国卫生和经贸交流与发展。中国政府高度重视食品安全工作，近年来相继采取了一系列重要举措，法制法规不断完善，食品安全标准制定取得进展，监管能力不断提高。双方表示，今后将进一步在食品标准、法规、事故处置等领域加强合作。

　　在美国国立卫生研究院，陈竺与弗朗西斯·克林斯（Francis Collins）院长和研究所有关负责人，就中风、高血压、心脑血管疾病等慢性病、烟草控制，以及艾滋病、耐多药结核病防控科学研究、人员培训等进行了深入交流。陈竺希望两国医学科学家共同努力，发挥各自优势，加强转化医学人员培训等方面的合作，促进中国医学科研机构的能力建设。卫生部国际司、疾控局有关负责人陪同参加了上述活动。
