南非开始艾滋病疫苗临床试验

  比勒陀利亚7月20日电 南非医学研究会(MRC)今天宣布,由他们主持研制的两种艾滋病疫苗将正式进入临床试验,这标志着南非这个饱受艾滋病困扰的发展中国家在艾滋病疫苗研究方面取得重大进展。

  MRC主任安东尼·姆贝武介绍说,临床试验初期将在36名志愿者中进行,目的是对艾滋病疫苗的安全性和有效性进行评估。他透露,这两种疫苗的设计和研制是在开普敦大学完成的,同时得到了美国国家卫生研究所的帮助,此前已有12名美国志愿者成为该疫苗的试验者。

  姆贝武指出,艾滋病问题带给南非巨大的挑战。到去年为止,南非约有520万艾滋病感染者,人数居世界各国之首,其中尤以妇女受害最深,年龄在20岁至34岁的青年妇女中,约有1/3不幸感染该病毒。

  南非政府认识到,针对南部非洲人群中流行的艾滋病病毒亚型C株研发出价格适当的有效疫苗,对南非来说是至关重要的。早在1999年,南非卫生部和科技部就联合发起了艾滋病疫苗计划,在10年内投资2.5亿兰特支持艾滋病疫苗研究。姆贝武自豪地说,大约250名科技人员参与了此项研究,在此过程中,不仅培养了一大批博士,发表了众多学术论文,同时在南非树立起了生物技术持续发展的模式。像巴西、韩国等新兴国家,都在努力发展自己的艾滋病疫苗设计和研发能力,但南非是第一个到达临床试验阶段的国家。

  由于艾滋病疫苗研发充满风险,有人认为不如将巨资投入艾滋病预防和教育更明智。对此,姆贝武解释说:“尽管南非的安全套发放和性行为教育工作都做得不错,但每天仍然有上百人感染艾滋病病毒,因此,艾滋病疫苗绝对是南非必需的。”他指出,南非科学家在艾滋病疫苗研发过程中建立的复杂的技术体系,同样可以用来研发肺结核及禽流感疫苗。如果下一次全球大流感暴发,每个国家都会忙于开发疫苗。南非不能依赖别人,拥有自己的疫苗研发技术和工业化生产能力是非常重要的。(记者 李学华)
