一九六六也是流行乐坛竞争非常激烈的一年。这一年，流行乐坛的大头们都出了非常经典的专辑：Beach Boys 出了 Pet Sounds 、Bob Dylan 出了 Blonde on Blonde、Beatles 出了 Revolver、Rolling Stones 出了 Aftermath，这些专辑我们回头去看，都会同意是六○年代最好的专辑，所以 Simon & Garfunkel 在这样的竞争压力下，当然要奋发图强，结果也确实没有让人失望。
我们现在要看的是他们在一九六七年上一个电视节目The Smothers Brothers Show唱的 Feeling Groovy，这首歌的的正式名称叫做The 59th Street Bridge Song。纽约五十九街的桥横越哈德逊河，因为 Paul Simon和 Art Garfunkel 都是纽约土生土长的孩子，就写了这首歌献给老家。
它被认为是代表嬉皮世代最无忧无虑、天真无邪、爱与和平的一首歌，也真的是 Paul Simon 最轻松、最阳光普照的一首歌。"Groovy" 在六○年代是非常 in 的一个字，它的意思是“好、妙、棒透了、爽、要得” 之类，比如听到一首歌很棒很屌，就是“It sounds so groovy”；看到演唱会现场很多人来听你唱歌，你对观众说“It's so groovy to be here, man!”但是groovy这个字过了六○年代就被抛弃不用了，到了七○年代谁敢再说groovy，就变成老土蛋，所以 feeling groovy 就变成老土蛋歌曲的代表（笑）：

接下来要听的是一首沈重的歌曲，也是他们第三张专辑的收场曲，叫做 7 O' Clock News / Silent Night。他们把“平安夜”和七点晚间新闻放在一起做了一首歌，左声道在播放晚间新闻，右声道是他们两个人用天籁一样的和声唱Silent Night。这个点子看起来没有很了不起，可是听起来实在很震撼。
一九六六年的晚间新闻会报些什么东西？首先报导的是人权法案碰到一些困难，看起来不太乐观；然后马丁路德金恩要在芝加哥发起一波新的游行，但芝加哥的市政府说，他要是真的这么干，市政府就会找一堆警察去现场；他们那一辈非常重要的喜剧演员Lenny Bruce在某一天晚上暴毙，据说是因为药物服用过量；在芝加哥有个连续杀人犯，一个晚上杀死了九个护士，即将出庭受审；华盛顿参议院有个会议，在讨论怎么处理当时的一些反美活动；然后他们的前副总统，理查尼克森，在一场对老兵的演讲中提到，美国即将进行一场艰苦的战争，可能会持续很久，但这场战争之中，针对美国最可怕的武器并不是来自国外，而是来自国内的反战份子……等等等等，这就是那时候的七点晚间新闻，旁边配上平安夜，这种表现方式对当时的人来说，是非常震撼的聆听经验：

Dr. Martin Luther King says he does not intend to cancel plans for
an open housing march Sunday into the Chicago suburb of Cicero.
Cook County Sheriff Richard Ogleby asked King to call off the march
and the police in Cicero said they would ask the National Guard to
be called out if it is held.
King, now in Atlanta, Georgia, plans to return to Chicago Tuesday.
In Chicago Richard Speck, accused murderer of nine student nurses,
was brought before a grand jury today for indictment.
The nurses were found stabbed an strangled in their Chicago apartment.
In Washington the atmosphere was tense today as a special subcommittee
of the House Committee on Un-American activities continued its probe
into anti-Vietnam war protests.
Demonstrators were forcibly evicted from the hearings when they began
chanting anti-war slogans.
Former Vice-President Richard Nixon says that unless there is a substantial
increase in the present war effort in Vietnam, the U.S. should look forward
to five more years of war.
In a speech before the Convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in
New York, Nixon also said opposition to the war in this country is the
greatest single weapon working against the U.S.

你们会在陶喆的新专辑听到类似的点子，我个人比较喜欢刚刚这个版本（笑）。
我们回顾摇滚乐的发展，不禁会好奇当时领头的乐团，为什么会在市场上有这么大的斩获？这是一个非常特别的年代。我们现在不觉得一九九八、一九九九离现在有多么遥远，好像一下就过去了，一个歌手隔三年五年出片也不会怎样。但在六○年代不能这样，通常一年要至少出两张唱片（后来变成一年出一张，唱片公司就要哇哇叫了），而且专辑中间还要出单曲，出单曲之外还要办巡回演唱，那个速度是非常恐怖的。但是很多乐团却能在这样的情况下，做出一张一张精彩的好专辑，这真的是不可思议，可能是因为青年文化的崛起，整个青年世代的力量开始展现他们的威力，而在六○年代不太有什么“上级指导员”之类，也没有太多模仿和抄袭（甚至反叛）的对象。摇滚乐那时候还没有建立什么大传统，当然啦，猫王、老蓝调都可能是某种程度的传统，但那还不太构成什么要被反叛掉的东西，所以他们可以尽情的去发挥、尽情的去拓展这门新的艺术的可能性。
所以我们看到许多乐团，在当时的成长是非常快速的，专辑一张一张的出，只有二十几岁的小毛头，怎么可以这么厉害，实在不可思议；而且那时候他们的器材还很简陋，录音间的技术还非常简单原始，这些都让我们不由得敬佩他们爆炸性的才能。
接下来要放的歌，出自他们的第四张专辑，Bookends。这张专辑里面，Simon & Garfunkel 进一步尝试新的音乐实验。Bookends的录音师兼制作人是 Roy Halee，此外 Simon & Garfunkel 也第一次自己挂名当制作人，也就是说，他们对自己的音乐成色，有了完全主导的权力。
这张专辑有个非常特别的地方，就是它第一次让我们听到Moog这种电子合成乐器的声音，Moog是当年一个非常原始、非常巨大，最早商业化的电子合成乐器之一。当时还没有半导体，所以都是真空管，Moog非常大台，而且极其昂贵，只有唱片公司买得起一两台，放在录音间里让大家摸。这个乐器最早出现在流行音乐，就是在Bookends 这张专辑，有那么一小段。Moog的音色现在听起来满俗的，但是对那时候的人来说是满先进、满震撼的。
Moog用的比较多的早期专辑还有 Beatles的 Abbey Road。那时候伦敦的 Abbey Road Studio 刚刚斥钜资买来一台 Moog，Paul McCartney 和John Lennon 看到就很兴奋，问唱片公司可不可以玩玩看啊，他们是 Beatles嘛，怎么可以不玩？（众笑）所以在Abbey Road 这张专辑里录了一些Moog的声音进去。不过Beatles 真的满伟大的，不会因为有了新玩具就乱搞，弄出一张很土很俗的音乐，Abbey Road里面，Moog的声音是非常恰如其分、非常好听的。
Bookends这张专辑里面，最重要的歌曲之一叫做 America。有没有看过“成名在望”这部电影？男主角的姊姊在一个管教很严厉的单亲家庭长大，连买唱片都必须要藏在大衣里才能偷带回家；有一段剧情就是，妈妈问大衣里藏了什么？拿出来看！结果看到了Bookends 这张唱片，妈妈就指着封面说，“你看这两个家伙，大麻抽太多了，眼睛迷茫无神！”（众大笑）最后女儿受不了了，要跟男朋友离家出走，临出门，女儿跟妈妈说，我离家出走的原因，都在 America这首歌里面，你听就知道了。
America 在唱什么？这是 Paul Simon 写歌技巧又达到另一个高峰的见证。这是一首对话体的歌，歌词轻描淡写，像一篇极短篇小说，但是意蕴深沈，非常细腻，讲的是一对男女，要上路去看看美国、去寻找美国。我们现在的窗外就可以看到台北，为什么要特别开车去看、去找？六○年代末期，整个世代的青年在越战、内政混乱、层出不穷的暴力、种族冲突、政治暗杀、价值观崩毁的情况下，大家都失去了他们的根，不知道他们还能有什么认同的对象、有谁值得崇拜。所以像 Mrs. Robinson 这首歌，Paul Simon召唤了几十年前洋基队的传奇打者狄马乔 Joe DiMaggio，因为在当下这个世代，美国人不再拥有他那样全国景仰的英雄了。
那怎么办呢？很多人离家流浪，有的人到旧金山的街头，变成嬉皮，住进嬉皮公社，搞杂交、吸大麻、吃 LSD…整个生命就这样堕落下去。也有一些人投入激进的政治运动，像是暗杀组织 Weathermen，他们的名称典故来自 Bob Dylan的歌词 you don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows，这群激进的左派小鬼觉得，这歌好酷啊，我们这个暗杀组织就叫做“气象员”吧！
当然还有更多年轻人，没有这么激烈的主张，但至少他们可以有一台车，身上有一点钱，可以开车横越美国，再不然坐灰狗巴士、搭便车也好，总要去看看这块土地长什么样子？看看真正在这块土地上休养生息的人是谁？后来有一部电影叫“逍遥骑士”Easy Rider，讲的也就是这样的感觉。
这首歌的主角出发去寻找美国，从Saginaw花四天时间搭便车到匹茨堡、认识了另一个出来流浪的女孩，两人一起坐上灰狗巴士，沿路调笑。最后在纽泽西的收费公路上，他望向窗外，数着一辆辆的车，赫然惊觉这满路的车，也都跟他一样，是出来寻找美国的。最后这个画面，就像电影的镜头一下子拉高拉远，非常震撼，唱出了无数青年的心情。

Bookends 这张专辑另一个有趣的地方是，Paul Simon 开始试着写不属于他那个世代的事情。这张专辑另一首很重要的主题曲，叫做Old Friends，老朋友。这老朋友的“老”，不只是两个人认识得久，而是年纪真的很老的老朋友。一对老朋友坐在公园的长椅上，两人什么话也没说，等着夕阳西沈，一张报纸飘过去，落在他们的鞋跟上，然后又飞走。我们看歌词的最后一段：“想像一下很久很久以后 / 你我共坐在一条公园椅上 / 这难道不奇怪吗？ / 想想有一天 / 我们都要变成七十岁”。
对当时的嬉皮世代来说，从 Beatles、Grateful Dead、Rolling Stones这样一路听下来，然后忽然听到 Old Friends这首歌，好像一脚踏空，掉到一个光线昏暗、夕阳西沈、晚风缓缓吹过来的世界里。这里没有了狂飙的豪情，却多了对人世、对现实的细腻描写。也因为这样，Bookends 这张专辑，当时被很多人疯狂喜爱，因为它唱出一些没有人处理过的题材，而且真的做得很好，Paul Simon 用非常单纯的题材、简洁收敛的语言，却写出了非常细腻的东西。
所以 Old Friends这首歌，除了“情景交融”的能力，还可以看到Paul Simon 的进步有多么惊人，从那个抢劫酒铺的文艺青年，进步到 Old Friends 这首歌的细腻和深沈。这首歌使用了弦乐的编制，做出起承转合、跌宕磅礡的气魄。另外，有一段是精选集听不到的∶在专辑中这首歌前面，Art Garfunkel 去养老院“田野录音”，录了很多老年人的对话，抱怨那个、讲讲这个的情景。接上后面这样的音乐，整个的深度又不一样了。

从一九六六年 The Sound of Silence 得到冠军，到一九七○年出最后一张专辑 Bridge Over Troubled Water ，总共只有四年。这段期间他们出了四张唱片，加上第一张专辑 Wednesday Morning 3A.M.，一共也只有五张。不过，这五张唱片的影响真的非常大。当他们做到最后一张唱片的时候，想想看，如果你是 Paul Simon 或Art Garfunkel，会有什么感觉？
你们的每张唱片都获得市场与评论的双赢、赚了非常多的钱、唱了上千场演唱会，其实会开始有点烦、有点腻了。从Paul Simon的角度来看：他是所有歌曲的作者，但他只能跟这个家伙合作，不免绑手绑脚，写歌的时候就要考虑到 Garfunkel能不能唱、Roy Halee该怎么处理这首歌；而从 Garfunkel的角度来看，他也满无奈的，没有什么表现的机会， 反正 Paul Simon写歌实在太厉害，干脆全部交给他去写，可是长久以来，所有的光芒都在 Paul Simon 身上，他只负责唱歌，多少会有点烦。
就在他们慢慢出现裂痕的时候，还是得再出一张唱片，Paul Simon闷头写新歌，写写写，觉得还不太够。这时候他听到一首福音歌曲，里面有句歌词的意象满动人的∶“如果你相信上帝、呼唤他的名字，他会在深不见底的河流上为你建造一座大桥”，从这个意象出发，Paul Simon 写下了 Bridge Over Troubled Water 的草稿。这首歌刚写出来的时候，是Ｇ和弦，Paul Simon原本想自己用假音唱，后来觉得不太对，就拿给 Art Garfunkel。Garfunkel 一听，就说：“你说这是你写过最好的歌？不会吧？我觉得这歌不会卖，你自己唱，我才不要唱。”后来连制作人 Roy Halee 也跑来劝Garfunkel 唱唱看，他才勉为其难。
一开始，他们对于编曲也没有太明确的想法。Roy Halee 后来提到这首歌，说他第一次听到Paul Simon 弹吉他唱给他听的时候，第一个反应就是“这一定要找一个 Gospel 的钢琴来伴奏”，后来果然也是这样做，然后配上Art Garfunkel的男高音，哇，气势磅礡！整个感觉就起来了。可是光这样还是觉得少了什么，所以就想，在 "sail on silver girl" 的那段来转一下，又加了管弦乐的东西进来。你听，这首歌到第三段的时候，都还只有一台钢琴伴奏，到后面管弦乐才慢慢进来；至于打击乐的部分，编曲非常细致，打在你心坎里最脆弱的地方，轻轻地拍。
这首歌最动人的地方是，你以为它该结束了，结果后面又转出来新的段落，把整个境界都提升起来。编曲非常清楚，一层、一层、再一层，然后在大高潮中结束。至于原本不想唱的 Art Grfunkel ，在这首歌里面，把他的五脏六腑都唱出来，许多人都认为这是他毕生最好的一次演唱表现。后来，他也承认他对这首歌的确判断有错。（众大笑）
包括 Paul Simon、Art Garfunkel 和 Roy Halee都觉得这首歌实在很不错，拿来当唱片标题应该没有问题，所以专辑就叫做 Bridge Over Troubled Water 。到了母带做好，拿给唱片公司老板听，老板说，“靠！这首歌我们来发单曲，一定会大卖！”Paul Simon 说：“你确定吗？第一首就拿慢歌当主打歌不好吧？慢歌不好卖喔。”老板说：“你相信我！”专辑上市前先发单曲，咻一声就冲到排行榜冠军；一个月以后，这张专辑正式发行，没多久就卖掉五百万张，成为整个七○年代最畅销的专辑之一，甚至把 Beatles 的 Let It Be 都给Ｋ掉了。

当然，Bridge Over Troubled Water 这张专辑值得一提的，不只是标题曲而已。像El Condor Pasa，“老鹰之歌”，就是 Paul Simon对民族音乐、世界音乐产生兴趣的最早范例，他请来一组祕鲁的乐手，替他演奏安地斯山的民谣，然后配上歌词，现在听起来还是荡气回肠，这样的精神一路延续到他的单飞生涯，直到1986年和南非乐手合作的Graceland、和后来跟巴西乐手合作的Rhythm Of The Saints，许多脉络都可以回溯到这首歌。另外像Cecelia，打击乐器排了一层又一层，让节奏乐器领导歌曲的进行，也是Simon & Garfunkel从来没有做过的编曲尝试。
最后我们来听，他们在一九八○年，解散十年之后，在纽约中央公园所举办的重组免费演唱会。这场演唱会非常轰动，来了足足五十万人，这是整个 Woodstock 的人数。这天他们唱的第一首歌就是Mrs. Robinson，其中最有名的一段歌词，就是刚刚提到的 Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio? A nation turns its lonely eyes to you。这首歌是六○年代达斯汀霍夫曼主演的电影“毕业生”的主题曲，电影的女主角就叫 Mrs. Robinson，当时很多人以为 Paul Simon 是为电影量身打造这首歌的，其实不然，他写这首歌的时候，根本没看过剧本，没想到事后发现内容满合的，这首歌也跟着电影大卖座而冲上排行榜冠军，这场演唱会是事隔十几年之后，大家重聚一堂，两个人这时也都快四十岁了。你会发现Paul Simon的“气”变得不一样了，更沈、更稳，也更沧桑了些。不过他们的和声，仍然是非常动人的。

Dr. Martin Luther King says he does not intend to cancel plans for

Demonstrators were forcibly evicted from the hearings when they began
chanting anti-war slogans.
Former Vice-President Richard Nixon says that unless there is a substantial
increase in the present war effort in Vietnam, the U.S. should look forward
to five more years of war.
In a speech before the Convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in
New York, Nixon also said opposition to the war in this country is the
greatest single weapon working against the U.S.

你们会在陶喆的新专辑听到类似的点子，我个人比较喜欢刚刚这个版本（笑）。
我们回顾摇滚乐的发展，不禁会好奇当时领头的乐团，为什么会在市场上有这么大的斩获？这是一个非常特别的年代。我们现在不觉得一九九八、一九九九离现在有多么遥远，好像一下就过去了，一个歌手隔三年五年出片也不会怎样。但在六○年代不能这样，通常一年要至少出两张唱片（后来变成一年出一张，唱片公司就要哇哇叫了），而且专辑中间还要出单曲，出单曲之外还要办巡回演唱，那个速度是非常恐怖的。但是很多乐团却能在这样的情况下，做出一张一张精彩的好专辑，这真的是不可思议，可能是因为青年文化的崛起，整个青年世代的力量开始展现他们的威力，而在六○年代不太有什么“上级指导员”之类，也没有太多模仿和抄袭（甚至反叛）的对象。摇滚乐那时候还没有建立什么大传统，当然啦，猫王、老蓝调都可能是某种程度的传统，但那还不太构成什么要被反叛掉的东西，所以他们可以尽情的去发挥、尽情的去拓展这门新的艺术的可能性。
所以我们看到许多乐团，在当时的成长是非常快速的，专辑一张一张的出，只有二十几岁的小毛头，怎么可以这么厉害，实在不可思议；而且那时候他们的器材还很简陋，录音间的技术还非常简单原始，这些都让我们不由得敬佩他们爆炸性的才能。
接下来要放的歌，出自他们的第四张专辑，Bookends。这张专辑里面，Simon & Garfunkel 进一步尝试新的音乐实验。Bookends的录音师兼制作人是 Roy Halee，此外 Simon & Garfunkel 也第一次自己挂名当制作人，也就是说，他们对自己的音乐成色，有了完全主导的权力。
这张专辑有个非常特别的地方，就是它第一次让我们听到Moog这种电子合成乐器的声音，Moog是当年一个非常原始、非常巨大，最早商业化的电子合成乐器之一。当时还没有半导体，所以都是真空管，Moog非常大台，而且极其昂贵，只有唱片公司买得起一两台，放在录音间里让大家摸。这个乐器最早出现在流行音乐，就是在Bookends 这张专辑，有那么一小段。Moog的音色现在听起来满俗的，但是对那时候的人来说是满先进、满震撼的。
Moog用的比较多的早期专辑还有 Beatles的 Abbey Road。那时候伦敦的 Abbey Road Studio 刚刚斥钜资买来一台 Moog，Paul McCartney 和John Lennon 看到就很兴奋，问唱片公司可不可以玩玩看啊，他们是 Beatles嘛，怎么可以不玩？（众笑）所以在Abbey Road 这张专辑里录了一些Moog的声音进去。不过Beatles 真的满伟大的，不会因为有了新玩具就乱搞，弄出一张很土很俗的音乐，Abbey Road里面，Moog的声音是非常恰如其分、非常好听的。
Bookends这张专辑里面，最重要的歌曲之一叫做 America。有没有看过“成名在望”这部电影？男主角的姊姊在一个管教很严厉的单亲家庭长大，连买唱片都必须要藏在大衣里才能偷带回家；有一段剧情就是，妈妈问大衣里藏了什么？拿出来看！结果看到了Bookends 这张唱片，妈妈就指着封面说，“你看这两个家伙，大麻抽太多了，眼睛迷茫无神！”（众大笑）最后女儿受不了了，要跟男朋友离家出走，临出门，女儿跟妈妈说，我离家出走的原因，都在 America这首歌里面，你听就知道了。
America 在唱什么？这是 Paul Simon 写歌技巧又达到另一个高峰的见证。这是一首对话体的歌，歌词轻描淡写，像一篇极短篇小说，但是意蕴深沈，非常细腻，讲的是一对男女，要上路去看看美国、去寻找美国。我们现在的窗外就可以看到台北，为什么要特别开车去看、去找？六○年代末期，整个世代的青年在越战、内政混乱、层出不穷的暴力、种族冲突、政治暗杀、价值观崩毁的情况下，大家都失去了他们的根，不知道他们还能有什么认同的对象、有谁值得崇拜。所以像 Mrs. Robinson 这首歌，Paul Simon召唤了几十年前洋基队的传奇打者狄马乔 Joe DiMaggio，因为在当下这个世代，美国人不再拥有他那样全国景仰的英雄了。
那怎么办呢？很多人离家流浪，有的人到旧金山的街头，变成嬉皮，住进嬉皮公社，搞杂交、吸大麻、吃 LSD…整个生命就这样堕落下去。也有一些人投入激进的政治运动，像是暗杀组织 Weathermen，他们的名称典故来自 Bob Dylan的歌词 you don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows，这群激进的左派小鬼觉得，这歌好酷啊，我们这个暗杀组织就叫做“气象员”吧！
当然还有更多年轻人，没有这么激烈的主张，但至少他们可以有一台车，身上有一点钱，可以开车横越美国，再不然坐灰狗巴士、搭便车也好，总要去看看这块土地长什么样子？看看真正在这块土地上休养生息的人是谁？后来有一部电影叫“逍遥骑士”Easy Rider，讲的也就是这样的感觉。
这首歌的主角出发去寻找美国，从Saginaw花四天时间搭便车到匹茨堡、认识了另一个出来流浪的女孩，两人一起坐上灰狗巴士，沿路调笑。最后在纽泽西的收费公路上，他望向窗外，数着一辆辆的车，赫然惊觉这满路的车，也都跟他一样，是出来寻找美国的。最后这个画面，就像电影的镜头一下子拉高拉远，非常震撼，唱出了无数青年的心情。

Bookends 这张专辑另一个有趣的地方是，Paul Simon 开始试着写不属于他那个世代的事情。这张专辑另一首很重要的主题曲，叫做Old Friends，老朋友。这老朋友的“老”，不只是两个人认识得久，而是年纪真的很老的老朋友。一对老朋友坐在公园的长椅上，两人什么话也没说，等着夕阳西沈，一张报纸飘过去，落在他们的鞋跟上，然后又飞走。我们看歌词的最后一段：“想像一下很久很久以后 / 你我共坐在一条公园椅上 / 这难道不奇怪吗？ / 想想有一天 / 我们都要变成七十岁”。
对当时的嬉皮世代来说，从 Beatles、Grateful Dead、Rolling Stones这样一路听下来，然后忽然听到 Old Friends这首歌，好像一脚踏空，掉到一个光线昏暗、夕阳西沈、晚风缓缓吹过来的世界里。这里没有了狂飙的豪情，却多了对人世、对现实的细腻描写。也因为这样，Bookends 这张专辑，当时被很多人疯狂喜爱，因为它唱出一些没有人处理过的题材，而且真的做得很好，Paul Simon 用非常单纯的题材、简洁收敛的语言，却写出了非常细腻的东西。
所以 Old Friends这首歌，除了“情景交融”的能力，还可以看到Paul Simon 的进步有多么惊人，从那个抢劫酒铺的文艺青年，进步到 Old Friends 这首歌的细腻和深沈。这首歌使用了弦乐的编制，做出起承转合、跌宕磅礡的气魄。另外，有一段是精选集听不到的∶在专辑中这首歌前面，Art Garfunkel 去养老院“田野录音”，录了很多老年人的对话，抱怨那个、讲讲这个的情景。接上后面这样的音乐，整个的深度又不一样了。

从一九六六年 The Sound of Silence 得到冠军，到一九七○年出最后一张专辑 Bridge Over Troubled Water ，总共只有四年。这段期间他们出了四张唱片，加上第一张专辑 Wednesday Morning 3A.M.，一共也只有五张。不过，这五张唱片的影响真的非常大。当他们做到最后一张唱片的时候，想想看，如果你是 Paul Simon 或Art Garfunkel，会有什么感觉？
你们的每张唱片都获得市场与评论的双赢、赚了非常多的钱、唱了上千场演唱会，其实会开始有点烦、有点腻了。从Paul Simon的角度来看：他是所有歌曲的作者，但他只能跟这个家伙合作，不免绑手绑脚，写歌的时候就要考虑到 Garfunkel能不能唱、Roy Halee该怎么处理这首歌；而从 Garfunkel的角度来看，他也满无奈的，没有什么表现的机会， 反正 Paul Simon写歌实在太厉害，干脆全部交给他去写，可是长久以来，所有的光芒都在 Paul Simon 身上，他只负责唱歌，多少会有点烦。
就在他们慢慢出现裂痕的时候，还是得再出一张唱片，Paul Simon闷头写新歌，写写写，觉得还不太够。这时候他听到一首福音歌曲，里面有句歌词的意象满动人的∶“如果你相信上帝、呼唤他的名字，他会在深不见底的河流上为你建造一座大桥”，从这个意象出发，Paul Simon 写下了 Bridge Over Troubled Water 的草稿。这首歌刚写出来的时候，是Ｇ和弦，Paul Simon原本想自己用假音唱，后来觉得不太对，就拿给 Art Garfunkel。Garfunkel 一听，就说：“你说这是你写过最好的歌？不会吧？我觉得这歌不会卖，你自己唱，我才不要唱。”后来连制作人 Roy Halee 也跑来劝Garfunkel 唱唱看，他才勉为其难。
一开始，他们对于编曲也没有太明确的想法。Roy Halee 后来提到这首歌，说他第一次听到Paul Simon 弹吉他唱给他听的时候，第一个反应就是“这一定要找一个 Gospel 的钢琴来伴奏”，后来果然也是这样做，然后配上Art Garfunkel的男高音，哇，气势磅礡！整个感觉就起来了。可是光这样还是觉得少了什么，所以就想，在 "sail on silver girl" 的那段来转一下，又加了管弦乐的东西进来。你听，这首歌到第三段的时候，都还只有一台钢琴伴奏，到后面管弦乐才慢慢进来；至于打击乐的部分，编曲非常细致，打在你心坎里最脆弱的地方，轻轻地拍。
这首歌最动人的地方是，你以为它该结束了，结果后面又转出来新的段落，把整个境界都提升起来。编曲非常清楚，一层、一层、再一层，然后在大高潮中结束。至于原本不想唱的 Art Grfunkel ，在这首歌里面，把他的五脏六腑都唱出来，许多人都认为这是他毕生最好的一次演唱表现。后来，他也承认他对这首歌的确判断有错。（众大笑）
包括 Paul Simon、Art Garfunkel 和 Roy Halee都觉得这首歌实在很不错，拿来当唱片标题应该没有问题，所以专辑就叫做 Bridge Over Troubled Water 。到了母带做好，拿给唱片公司老板听，老板说，“靠！这首歌我们来发单曲，一定会大卖！”Paul Simon 说：“你确定吗？第一首就拿慢歌当主打歌不好吧？慢歌不好卖喔。”老板说：“你相信我！”专辑上市前先发单曲，咻一声就冲到排行榜冠军；一个月以后，这张专辑正式发行，没多久就卖掉五百万张，成为整个七○年代最畅销的专辑之一，甚至把 Beatles 的 Let It Be 都给Ｋ掉了。

当然，Bridge Over Troubled Water 这张专辑值得一提的，不只是标题曲而已。像El Condor Pasa，“老鹰之歌”，就是 Paul Simon对民族音乐、世界音乐产生兴趣的最早范例，他请来一组祕鲁的乐手，替他演奏安地斯山的民谣，然后配上歌词，现在听起来还是荡气回肠，这样的精神一路延续到他的单飞生涯，直到1986年和南非乐手合作的Graceland、和后来跟巴西乐手合作的Rhythm Of The Saints，许多脉络都可以回溯到这首歌。另外像Cecelia，打击乐器排了一层又一层，让节奏乐器领导歌曲的进行，也是Simon & Garfunkel从来没有做过的编曲尝试。
最后我们来听，他们在一九八○年，解散十年之后，在纽约中央公园所举办的重组免费演唱会。这场演唱会非常轰动，来了足足五十万人，这是整个 Woodstock 的人数。这天他们唱的第一首歌就是Mrs. Robinson，其中最有名的一段歌词，就是刚刚提到的 Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio? A nation turns its lonely eyes to you。这首歌是六○年代达斯汀霍夫曼主演的电影“毕业生”的主题曲，电影的女主角就叫 Mrs. Robinson，当时很多人以为 Paul Simon 是为电影量身打造这首歌的，其实不然，他写这首歌的时候，根本没看过剧本，没想到事后发现内容满合的，这首歌也跟着电影大卖座而冲上排行榜冠军，这场演唱会是事隔十几年之后，大家重聚一堂，两个人这时也都快四十岁了。你会发现Paul Simon的“气”变得不一样了，更沈、更稳，也更沧桑了些。不过他们的和声，仍然是非常动人的。
