A PRESTIGIOUS local university
yesterday denied an accusation by one of its graduates that it
sells theses for profits.
Fudan University issued a statement on its website, saying that it
has joined a national database to offer graduate papers for public
knowledge but has never profited from it.
"The statement surprised me," said Yoko Marikawa, an EMBA student
who graduated from the university early this year and set up a
local firm caring for seniors.
"I feel very angry that the university wants to escape its
responsibilities," she added.
The EMBA student from Fudan's School of Management said she signed
a 10-year credential protocol with the school at the end of last
year. Under the protocol, the school can't publish the thesis or
make copies for 10 years.
But she was surprised to find the thesis was on the database
www.cnki.net in July. The website publishes papers by Masters and
PhD students from hundreds of universities.
Marikawa said she was told that her credential protocol was signed
with the school's library, not the Graduate School, which provided
her paper to the database. The school helped get the thesis removed
from the website.
However, after media reports, Fudan issued a public statement
telling a different story.
The university said Marikawa had applied to list her graduation
thesis as a confidential file, but failed to get approval.
School officials claimed they removed the thesis out of respect for
the writer.
