艾滋病是一种隐藏性很深的病种，感染艾滋病毒以后，人体在很长时间内是没有任何症状或者症状较轻容易被忽略，在急性感染期大部分人是没有任何症状，有些人会出现持续发热、淋巴肿大、皮疹、腹泻、恶心、呕吐等症状。然而这些症状与普通病人没有区别，这就增加了艾滋病早期发现的难度，因此做HIV抗体检测成为一项发现艾滋病感染的重要手段。
目前我国艾滋病感染人群数量每年呈逐步上升的趋势，其中以性传播所占人群上升最快，血液传播位居其次，母婴传播数量最低。每年各地方都会投入很多资金去宣传和预防艾滋病，号召大家多去了解艾滋病方面的知识，认识其主要传播途径，从传播根源上进行防护。然而，其效果并不太明显，一方面大家对于艾滋比较恐惧，有些人甚至是谈艾色变，完全不了解艾滋病究竟是怎样一个病种。另一方面，虽然每年都有免费发放安全套，但是很多人碍于面子问题，并不是太积极的去领取。因此，艾滋病的宣传和预防进度缓慢。
